The Year in Review – 2009

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I have done this survey, or some variation on it, every year since 2006.  I think.  Why not do it again?

1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?

How’s this for an announcement?: made the very small beginnings of a baby.  NOTE: if you are my Facebook friend, please don’t write anything about this on there. It’s really too early for me to be telling people as I’m only 6 and a half weeks along, but I couldn’t resist.

Also: abstained from drinking while touring Napa Valley, abstained from rare meats and soft cheeses, and went off my Zoloft, all thanks to the tiny person.   Took the PRAXIS exam.  Applied for and was accepted into a graduate school program to become a teacher.  Decided to stop trying so hard on something that I shouldn’t write about here.  Did something that wasn’t horrible, but I’m still not proud of it and won’t write about it here.  Heard my sweet nephew and niece attempt to say my name (“Wa-wa” was the best result, and it KILLS ME).  Went to a knitting conference.  Created a knitting group.  Totally neglected this blog.   Went a whole year without going to my home town.  Ate kind of a lot of beets.  Ran two 5Ks.   Added $202 worth of delectable chocolates to my virtual cart on the Woodhouse website and then (sensibly) abandoned it.  Drank a lot of seltzer water.  Went to a fortune cookie factory and paid 50 cents to take a photo.

2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don’t know!  I need to see if I made a list last year.  That will give me something to post about next time.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes: Erin, to Ellie; Alice, to Marco; Shara, to Gus; and Julie, to Frances.  I feel like I’m forgetting someone – if I forgot you, I am sorry!  (Ashley, WL was born in 2008, right?  Why am I forgetting???)

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Thankfully, no.  Rob’s grandpa died, though.

5. What countries did you visit?

Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

An out-of-the-womb, healthy baby (am terrified of this first trimester).   I’d also like to have written a book, or at least a huge chunk of  a book.  I finally have an idea that I think might actually work.

7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

The weekend of 4/23, when I went with my awesome friend Sarah to Stitches South!

12/4 – the day I went to a fertility doctor who made me feel like crap about my weight and told me I probably wouldn’t conceive until I got thinner (story forthcoming)

12/17 – the day I went in for bloodwork so the same fertility doctor could analyze my menstrual cycle; I ended up getting a call telling me I didn’t need fertility doctors after all.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

The two 5Ks were pretty big for me; my PRAXIS score was huge as well (I rocked that exam, plus I got a high enough score on the math section that St. Joe’s waived a pre-requisite course for me).  Actually, I suppose the biggest was making the decision to go back to school.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Enh.  Weight loss plans.  Also, I did not keep the house very clean and I kind of sucked at my job (although I like to blame the economy for that).

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Nothing major.  I did learn that I have a degenerative eye disease and am going to need surgery for it (but not until after el bebe is hatched).  It also is not fun to struggle with depression and not be allowed to take an anti-depressant.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

YARN!  Glorious, glorious YARN!  Also: my tickets to Denver to see my sister and the littles, and my ticket to Atlanta and admission to Stitches South.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I think we should all pat ourselves on the back to celebrate our behavior in 2009.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Oh, I’m not going to name names here.  Hey look!  My behavior once again merits celebration?  (Pat pat pat -on-the-back).

14. Where did most of your money go?

Mortgage, yarn, and wine.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Knitting!  Friends!  El Bebe!  Travel!  My niece and nephew!

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?

Y’all, I have been embarrassingly out of it when it comes to music.  I see a new year’s resolution in this…

17. Compared to this time last year, are you a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer?

a) happier (although unmedicated, which makes me inexplicably/randomly weepier); b) about the same size; c) richer

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Listening to music, both live and at home.  And I don’t feel like I read enough books this year.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Whining.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Well, for 2009 we went up to Vermont to stay with Rob’s mom, then drove to Hartford and flew to San Francisco and drove to Napa Valley and flew back to Hartford and drove back to Brattleboro and then drove back to Philadelphia.  I’m exhausted just writing that out.  Also, I will NEVER do that much traveling in one holiday period again.  AND, Abbers, I’m sorry I flaked in San Francisco.  When people say they are exhausted in their first trimester, BELIEVE THEM.   Phew.

21. Did you fall in love in 2009?

Nope, but I stayed in love in 2009.

21 and 1/2. Holy crap, is this meme ever going to be over?

22. How many one-night stands? Ha. Zero.

23. What was your favorite TV program?

Modern Family, 30 Rock, Dexter, Big Love, Top Chef, and I’m sure I’m forgetting something.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate last year?

As in years past, I think hate is a very very strong word.  I try not to hate anyone.  Dislike?  Yes.  Hate?  No, thank you.

25. What was the best book you read?

I have no idea.  My top 11, though, are:

The Razor’s Edge
State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America
The Well & the Mine
The Weight of Heaven
Clara’s War
Crazy for the Storm
Rampant (Yay, killer unicorns!)
America America
Hummingbirds
How Green Was My Valley
American Wife

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Dude, I am sad to admit that I made no great musical discoveries this year.  Oh wait – I take that back.  Andrew Bird and Vampire Weekend were new to me this year.

27. What did you want and get?

Yarn, a trip to a knitting conference (are you seeing a theme here?), a spa gift certificate, and a make-your-own-seltzer-water machine.  How I love the make-your-own-seltzer machine!  Oh, and the tiny beginnings of a baby.  (nice afterthought, huh?  Sorry, kiddo.)

28. What did you want and not get?

50 pounds thinner.

29. What was your favorite film this year?

Dude, I don’t remember a SINGLE MOVIE that I saw this year.  I think they were all pretty mediocre.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I went to Fogo de Chao and celebrated my carnivorous nature with friends and Rob (I was doing the Atkins Diet at that time).  I turned 34.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Making a lot more placements, which would have meant making a lot more money.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept for 2006?

What’s a fashion concept?

33. What kept you sane?

Zoloft, therapy, knitting, and drinking.  Whee!
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Hmm.  I still fancy Vince Vaughn, methinks.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

Sarah Palin.  I’d like to send a pack of angry gnomes after her.

36. Who did you miss?

Anyone who lives far away.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

This is going to sound crazy, but my new boss!  She’s still a micromanager, but she’s got an excellent sense of humor and I really like her as a person.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006.

Don’t let mean fertility doctors bring you down.  Keep a lint brush in your desk at work so no one can tell you picked your pants out of the to-be-dry-cleaned pile before they actually made it to the dry cleaner.  It’s actually worth it to hit the stores at 5 a.m. after Thanksgiving, especially if you reward yourself with a Cracker Barrell breakfast at 7 a.m.   Math is still not any fun.    Acupuncture is weird but amazing.  Being an aunt gets better every year.  It’s okay to stop trying to like someone.  Faux-fur-lined coats are warm.  It feels really good to work hard at something and succeed (see: the math section of the Praxis exam; completing two 5Ks).

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

I choose to skip this one because my brain is fuzzy.  It’s my first day back at work in 2 weeks, y’all.

Meme Friday.

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My favorite kiwi tagged me for this meme ages ago (seriously – last May) and I only noticed it yesterday. Oy! So, here we go!

What is your current obsession?
Polls. And also: knitting and Facebook Scrabble and this navy blue velour pants & jacket set that I pretty much wear every night after work because it’s so comfortable.

What is your weirdest obsession?
Hmm. Maybe Ukrainian egg decorating? Oh! I don’t think I told y’all this, but when I hosted a baby shower for a friend at the beginning of this month, one of the guests noticed my tray of Ukrainian-decorated-eggs in my china cabinet. She asked me where I got them and I told her I’d made them, and then she started talking about how she was Ukrainian and grew up making those eggs. She then declared, “Huh. I think you might be the first non-Ukrainian person I have ever met who made these eggs.” Why yes, yes I am.

What are you wearing today?
This black chiffon-y dress, which is going to double as my Witch Dress at the Halloween party I’m attending tonight. The disappointing thing about it is that there’s this sort of funky black & ivory print just around the neckline, which I hope doesn’t ruin the witchiness of it. I also am wearing a pin with a pumpkin on it. And black stockings. And black pointy shoes with some ivory stuff on them to go with the neckline detail. And my glasses. Later tonight, however, I will be putting in my contacts (no matter how bad my eyes hurt) (because I’m sorry, but witches don’t wear glasses. Also, I don’t want to get green paint on my frames), applying green face paint, applying purple glittery faux eyelashes (I know witches don’t wear those, but it adds to the fun) and glow-in-the-dark faux fingernails, switching to some shoes with buckles on them, donning a wig and a witch hat, somehow attaching this weird creepy raven to my wrist, and carrying a broom.

What’s for dinner?
Wine and party food.

What would you eat for your last meal?
Wow, that’s a toughie. It would definitely culminate with vanilla ice cream.

What’s the last thing you bought?
Does the crap I got at Walgreen’s this morning count? Yes? Then fine: a new pair of stockings because mine had a hole in them, a diet coke, a pack of english muffins, and a tub of country crock margarine. BORING.

What are you listening to right now?
Co-workers talking

What do you think of the person who tagged you?
I have never met Martha, but she seems like an absolute hoot. Also, she makes adorable kids’ clothing.

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would you like it to be?
New York. Or Italy. Or somewhere nearer to my family.

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?
I would love to be in my Aunt Jane’s kitchen, having a glass of champagne with her and playing Skip Bo.

Which language do you want to learn?
I don’t want to go through the learning process – I just want to KNOW another language. Italian. I’d also like to know Spanish, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hindi, and Finish.

What is your favorite colour?
Green. Except I call it a “color”.

What is your favorite piece of clothing in your own wardrobe?
See: obsessions: navy blue velour jumpsuit (despite the fact that I feel like I’m trying to be on the Sopranos when I wear it). Also, the dress that I wore to Teenie‘s wedding (sorry, folks, but I forgot to bring my camera to it), which I also wore to my own rehearsal dinner.

What is your dream job?
Nail polish color namer. XPN radio DJ. And, the more I think about it, Teacher.

What’s your favourite magazine?
Ohhh, y’all are going to think I am so lame here, but I am really digging Better Homes & Gardens these days. And Eating Well. Man, I am not hip.

If you had £100 now, what would you spend it on?

Wine and yarn.

Describe your personal style?

Lazy? I am lazy when it comes to fashion and “style”.

What are you going to do after this?

Probably work. I’m pretty burned-out these days so it has been hard to focus.

What are your favourite films?
Stranger Than Fiction, Almost Famous, Slumdog Millionaire, Shag, Office Space, The Holiday, Elf

What’s your favourite fruit?
I don’t know if I have one favorite. I love almost all fruits! Maybe blueberries. Or strawberries. Or pineapple or honeycrisp apples or perfectly ripe peaches.

What inspires you?
People who strive for and maintain peace and happiness. And people who do cool things.

Do you collect anything?
Yarn, books, floaty pens, and I would really love to start collecting pretty/cool dessert/appetizer plates. I have three sets right now but I don’t think that counts as a collection.

Your favourite books?
Hoo boy, this list is long. You may as well just refer to my goodreads “favorites” list.

What are you currently reading?
American Wife, by Curtis Sittenfeld. I like it so far.

Go to your book shelf, take down the first book with a red spine you see, turn to page 26 and type out the first line:
My book shelf is at home and I am at work. Sorry, no can do.

By what criteria do you judge a person?
Lots of things, depending on my purpose for judging. This could get me on a tangent about the power dead-even rule, which my co-worker talks a lot about and which I think rings somewhat true (it is mentioned in this article), but I think I shall rein myself in. Generally, I like people who are nice, funny, intelligent, and good conversationalists. Enjoying a glass or three of wine, being artsy-craftsy, and liking board games are additional bonuses.

What skill would you like to acquire immediately?

I would like a super-fast metabolism that would allow me to eat whatever I want without gaining weight whether I exercise or not.

The rules:
1. Respond and rework; answer the questions on your blog, replace one question that you dislike with a question of your invention, add one more question of your own.
2. Tag eight other people. Enh, I’m not tagging anyone else. If you wish to tag yourself, feel free!

Yay, independence!

What’s not to love about a 4-day weekend?  That’s right: nothing.

Rob would kill me if he knew I was announcing to the internets that we are headed to the Jersey Shore, but we are.  And I just announced it, so please don’t tell him I told you.  For any criminals out there, I will remind you that we have very watchful neighbors, an alarm system, and not much of particular value in the home besides two obese cats and my rapidly-growing yarn stash, so check yourself before you wreck yourself.

I think I’ll amuse myself with a meme for the day, but first: an update.  I have started taking the Zoloft (Z, if you will) and am still probably experiencing withdrawal from the Lexies (er, Lexapro).  This means that I basically act like a woman with some extreme PMS going on.  I am no longer constantly weeping, but I do still cry at the drop of a hat – and not always out of sadness – and I’m ridiculously irritable.  For instance, Rob – who does not like nuts – went out of his way to buy and chop walnuts for me to put on a salad that he made us for dinner, without me asking.  This turned on the waterworks because I thought it was just the sweetest nicest thing ever (I still think it is sweet and nice, but sob-worthy?  Probably not).  Then, two hours later, I bit his head off for not turning down the TV volume during commercials.

Speaking of, that annoys the CRAP out of me.  Why are the commercials so much louder than the regular programming?  I hate it!  You know what else I hate?  Idiots who stand there waiting for an elevator without pushing the button.  I mean, it’s one thing if they just don’t press hard enough – but I have WATCHED people (who are about 10 steps ahead of me on my walk to the elevator bank) walk straight by the button and then stand there and wait.  Are they just so lazy that they figure someone else will come along and push it for them?  Or are they just fucking morons?

(See: Irritability.)

Also, I have decided that I hate the word “pamper”.  And that it looks funny.

Hrm.

In other news, I got new glasses.  I love them as much as I am capable of loving a pair of glasses.  The part that goes over my ear (the “temple”, if you will) is pink.  You can see them (and me making a weird smile) here.

While you’re clicking over to things on Flickr, you can also see the tiny pants I made for a friend’s unborn baby and a picture of me at age 6 or 7 with my sister and my cousins.   I basically look like a Seventh-Day Adventist or some such religion that disallows girls from wearing pants or cutting their hair, while every other kid in the picture is wearing jeans.  Have I told y’all about how I refused to wear anything but dresses and skirts until I was 10?  Yup.   All the other kids would be on the playground in shorts and t-shirts and tennis shoes, and then there I’d be in my Polly Flinders dresses and mary janes.   So prissy!

Anyway, let’s do a meme, okay?  I’m stealing this from Monkey and Stef.

What is your current obsession?
Knitting.  And also these chairs that I want that are really expensive.  Actually, it’s more the fabric that I want to use to upholster the chairs.  I should post a picture.

What is your weirdest obsession?

Hmm.  The knitting obsession is getting a bit weird.

What are you wearing today?

Black pants and a paisley-ish top that I got from Ann Taylor Loft, plus my black patent leather birkenstocks.  I laugh in the face of my company’s dress code.  (Okay, fine, I have a pair of pumps under my desk.)

What’s for dinner?

I have no clue.  We’ll probably go out somewhere.  I grilled a turkey kielbasa last night and made mac & cheese (from a box), so it’s not my turn to cook.

What would you eat for your last meal?

A homemade grilled cheeseburger, sweet potato fries, and a lot of vanilla and mint chocolate chip ice cream.

What’s the last thing you bought?

Hmm.  I’ve been on a shopping rampage, but if we’re being technically accurate here, the answer is 1/2 a BBLT sandwich and tomato soup at Corner Bakery.  Before that, new razorblades and hair clippy thing.  Before THAT, some glorious yarn.

What are you listening to right now?

The air conditioner.

What do you think of the person who tagged you?

Nobody tagged me, but I stole this from Stefanie and Monkey and I adore both of them.

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would you like it to be?

Gosh, I don’t know.  Close to my family and all of my friends.

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?

To my sister’s house to play with my niece and nephew, although it would break my heart to leave them.  So, maybe instead I’d like to be at a wine bar with my friend Alice.  This might actually happen in 20 minutes when my office closes for the holiday weekend.

Which language do you want to learn?

I don’t want to learn a language – I want to already know it.  Spanish.  it’s the most useful, I think.

What is your favorite colour?

It really depends on the item for me.  I’ve been into green lately, and blue – but I really love good ol’ girly pink.  In fact, my friend Erin is pregnant with a girl.  Erin has an aversion to pink, but she told me recently that she decided I’m going to have to be her wee one’s “pink fairy godmother”.  I like that.

What is your favorite piece of clothing in your own wardrobe?

I really love the first sweater I made for myself. Even though it is big and kind of makes me look pregnant.

What is your dream job?

Movie-soundtrack-song-picker, XPN DJ, novelist, travel writer, restaurant reviewer, book reviewer, nail polish color-namer.

What’s your favourite magazine?
Man, I don’t know anymore.  I’m with Monkey on Mental Floss – that’s a great one!  I used to love Blender, but either it has started sucking or I have gotten older and lamer.   The Food Network makes a good one and I’m enjoying the Better Homes & Gardens that my mom subscribed me to despite the fact that I think that immediately ages me a good 20 years.

If you had £100 now, what would you spend it on?
Oh, the possibilities are endless.  But let’s be honest: yarn and wine.  Or just yarn.

Describe your personal style?
Um…lazy?

What are you going to do after this?

Go home!  My office is closing early.

What are your favourite films?

Office Space
What’s your favourite fruit?
I love almost all fruits, minus bananas.  If i had to pick just one: blueberries.

What inspires you?

Others.

Do you collect anything?
Floaty pens.

Your favourite animal?

I dont’ think it’s fair to make me pick just one.

What are you currently reading?
Hunger, by Michael Grant.  It’s the sequel to Gone.  These are YA books.  I loved Gone, but Hunger is not as good.  And it’s gross, too.

Go to your book shelf, take down the first book with a red spine you see, turn to page 26 and type out the first line:

I’m at work, so this is impossible.

By what criteria do you judge a person?

How nice (or not) they are.  And whether they wear white shoes after Labor Day.

What skill would you like to acquire immediately?

I have been saying this for years: I really would like to have go-go-gadget-arms.

Happy 4th of July, everyone.

The Year in Review – 2008

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Hi there, my little whippersnappers! I bet you’ve been wondering where I am…or, um, perhaps you have more important things in your lives than this here blog. Whatevs. This is going to sound pretty darn pathetic, but the truth of the matter is that I haven’t been posting because of my own ineptitude. Seriously. I haven’t been able to log in to the administrative part of this thing in weeks, and then, randomly, today, voila! I got in!

In case you are wondering, YES, one of my resolutions for 2009 is to figure out how to do more stuff in wordpress all by my lonesome, without having to call in a Fixer.

So, hey, we have lots of catching up to do! Here it is, January 6 of the new year, and I haven’t even assessed my success (or failure, whichever the case may be) with last year’s resolutions! More importantly, I haven’t even told y’all about my latest adventure here on the internet!

That’s right, folks – I have (a small part of) a new blog! I am thrilled to introduce you to Very Bookish. In case you can’t tell from the title, it’s an online book club of sorts. The site is the brainchild of the lovely and talented RA, and I am very happy to have been asked to participate. This month, we’re discussing three very different books (The Hunger Games, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), with the discussions being led by NPW, OPH, and RA, respectively. In honor of Very Bookish’s debut, and because I am feeling generous and contest-y, I have decided to host a raffle! The prize will be my copy of The Hunger Games, which I thought rocked the hizouse. (That’s right. It didn’t just rock the house, it rocked the hizouse. That’s serious praise, yo.) If you’d like to enter the contest, let me know in the comments section.

Now that the necessary introductions have been made, it’s time to catch up on all my typical end-of-the-year stuff that I would have done if I were not a technical/computer moron. Let’s pretend like it’s December 29, okay?

I did this same meme last year, and possibly the year before, and I love it.

1. What did you do in 2007 that you’d never done before?
Became an aunt! Experienced baby puke up close and personal…without being grossed out! Read a lot of vampire books. Went to a couple concerts alone. Joined Facebook. Stopped taking birth control pills (how’s that for an announcement, huh?)(Sorry for the TMI). Saw my highest weight – a horrifying number – on the scale. Lost 15 pounds. Ate brussels sprouts. Fell in friend-love with my across-the-street neighbors. Wrote book reviews in exchange for free books.

2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Some, and yes. We’ll discuss this in more detail tomorrow.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yep! Debbie, Lisa, Angie, Megan, and Ashley (to Daniel and Gracie; Reagan and Noah; Finley; Ollie; and Walt, respectively). If you’re close to me and you gave birth and I forgot to include you in my list, I apologize.

4. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Dammit, I still want the same things as last year: Job security. And a winter coat that fits nicely. In my defense, I did go buy a new coat, but it’s still not quite as warm as I was hoping it would be and it doesn’t fit as nicely as I’d like it to fit.

5. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Every day that I visited my niece and nephew. I had no idea I would love them as much as I do, and I had no idea how unbelievably cool it would be to watch them grow up. Election night was pretty damn memorable, too, for obvious reasons.

6. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Being able to run 2 miles without stopping or feeling like I was going to die. Losing 15 pounds was a pretty big one, too.

7. What was your biggest failure?
I lost one of my closest friends. It’s debatable as to whether this is my failure or hers or both of ours or whatever, just as it’s debatable as to whether I technically lost her in December of 2007 or later in the year. Still, it feels like a failure and the sadness over it lingered throughout the year.

8. What was the best thing you bought?
Mortgage payments. The Wii. And lots of yarn.

9. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Hmm. I can’t think of anything specific, so I’ll just say everyone’s.

10. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Well, last year I said “Everyone’s” – because we’re all human, we all do applling and depressing things sometimes. I still believe that, but this year I was probably most appalled by a certain vice presidential (ahemsarahpalinahem) candidate. But wait! Was I more appalled by her? Or by McCain for nominating her? Hmmmm…

11. Where did most of your money go?
To the mortgage.

12. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My niece and nephew! Yarn! Knitting! (I really went overboard with the knitting this year). Facebook! Books! Twilight! The Twilight movies! Did I mention yarn? Yarn!

13. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer?
a) about the same. b) thinner – woot!. c) maybe slightly richer?

What about you? (Let me know if you did this meme or if you do it. And don’t forget to tell me if you want a chance to win The Hunger Games!)
